IRIS Run for Refugees 5K

February 6th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

After the cancellation of the Mid Winter Classic 10 Miler on Friday, I needed to find something to race this weekend. Ends up there was a 5K about 20 minutes from my house in New Haven, CT — the IRIS Run for Refugees 5K. Erica and I headed out on Sunday morning to race. When …

January was a tough month. Over 70 inches of snow and ice here in Central Connecticut (the most ever in a one month period) and the roads are pretty much un-runnable (they were un-bikeable too but that’s expected). Despite the not so fantastic weather, January was a pretty good month for me numbers wise. Here’s …

No Ego in Training

January 30th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Its the end of January and I’m in third week of a four week build phase after having completely 3 cycles (12 weeks of base). When in base all of my running and 99% of my cycling is in QT2 Z1, which is my aerobic endurance pace. For me this means maintaining a heart rate …

USAT Rankings

January 26th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Finally looked at my 2010 USAT Rankings today. For females 30-34 (despite the fact that I was 29 for all but 17 days of 2010) I ranked 618 out of 1900, putting me in the top-33%. Not bad if this were law school but definitely not where I want to be. It’ll be interesting to …

Re-tooling Nutrition

January 21st, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

As I have mentioned, at the moment, my biggest limiter is my body composition. I have somewhere between 25-40 pounds to loose in order to be at “race weight” — that is the weight at which I will race the fastest. I’m having a body fat test done on Sunday, which will help me get …

Goal Check

January 14th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

So with Sunday’s 5K, I finished my first chunk of base work for the 2011 season. The way my plan is set up, I had 12 weeks of base that spanned from October through the beginning of January, 4 weeks of build in January and February and then back to 12 more weeks of base …

Snow Dash 5K

January 9th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

I forgot how much 5Ks can hurt. Today was the Snow Dash 5K and I haven’t “run” a 5K in almost two years and I use the word “run” in the loosest possible way. The last time I crossed the finish line of a 5K, I did so in 29 minutes and change — just …

Body Composition as a Limiter

January 5th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

My biggest limiter is my body composition. As Coach Doug says I have the body of a swimmer and not of a triathlete. The goal is to get closer to the body of a triathlete without cutting calories so much that it negatively affects my training. The “easiest” way to do this is make sure …

2010 – Year in Review

January 4th, 2011 | Posted by Kelly Burns Gallagher in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

All in all 2010 was pretty good year both triathlon and life wise. For the first time ever in my less than illustrious triathlon career, I started to train consistently. I biked 305 hours, for a total of 5215 miles. I run 152 hours, for a total of 941 miles. I swam 67 hours for …
