For me,  post-pregnancy running and training isn’t pretty.  Unfortunately it got a little uglier this week.  While in Tulsa two weeks ago I fell.  Nothing serious (or so I thought).  I turned my left ankle wearing high heeled boots and fell to the ground.  The next morning I got up and ran.  I actually had a pretty good run with some super steep hills repeats. But after my run my knee ballooned up.  By the time I got on the plane to fly home in late afternoon, I was in a bit of pain.  The first  plane ride, short lay over, second plan ride and 1 a.m. drive home from the airport didn’t help either.  When I woke up on Saturday morning I was in a fair bit of pain and thought that I must have sprained my knee.  I put my knee up, iced it and hoped for the best.

ivy doctor

Ivy enjoyed our trip to the doctor more than I did.

I spent the next week wishing, hoping, praying that my knee would get better, but every day it felt worse.  After a week of pain I decided I needed to ortho and made an appointment for last Monday.  The doctor suspected that I had torn my meniscus and re assured me that I had not torn my ACL.  He scheduled a MRI on Wednesday and follow up appointment this morning.  The MRI had good news and bad news.  Good new is that none of my ligaments were torn.  The bad news there’s quite a bit of swelling, a sprain to the MCL, a 1 cm cyst and a “divot” in the hard cartilage of my left knee.  The doctor also thinks that the divot may be masking a tear to the meniscus.  The solution?  ‘m scheduled to have my knee scoped and the divot repaired on February 28th.  While this throws a wrench in my immediate plans — no Hyannis 10K for me and it looks like I’ll do a 5K at Wrightsville Beach rather than the half marathon — the biggie is still on the table.  Ready or not, I will be finishing Ironman Florida in November; Ivy needs some new bling.

🙁 Little setbacks make for stronger victories. You’ll be better than ever in no time.
