Last week I travelled from Hartford to Bend, Oregon for a running camp sponsored by Oiselle (#birdcamp).  It was an awesome trip and an awesome opportunity to meet fantastic women, even if I couldn’t run.  Here are some pictures from the week, it was awesome.

While I was in Bend, however, the toilet on out main floor developed a leak completing destroying our downstairs family room / bar, including the ceiling, carpet and furniture and the tile and wood floors on our first floor.  At this point about 2/3 of our house needs to be completely restored (the only positive is that the flooding was discovered by our dog walker so it didn’t go on for hours and hours and hours and cause more damage).  To top it off I came home from Bend with a 102 fever and was out of my mind miserable.  It seems to me that lately I’ve experienced some really fantastic highs coupled with some pretty terrible low.  For example I was chosen to wear #179 at Challenge Atlantic City and then crashed my bike and lacerated my knee/quad pretty badly.  While its great to be able to do and experience some many fantastic things, I feel like, at the moment I need some self imposed levelness.  While I still have no idea whether I will be physically able to complete Ironman Florida in November my goal for the next two plus months is #72CatastropheFreeDays.  I figure the only way I am going to make it to the starting line is to stay steady, keep with a routine and forgo chasing unicorns (including scheming on how to swing trips to inter bike and Kona) for the moment.

Dang Kelly it definitely does sound like you have been having some bad luck lately! Looks like you are having a positive attitude about it! Def stinks about your house!!! I hope everything gets seamlessly repaired. Bird camp looks like it was an incredible experience, wish I had been able to go!

I think levelness is key to keeping the catastrophes at bay. In my final build up to Challenge Penticton I “lost” both my keys and my phone (keys left in a Starbucks bathroom mid-run, phone lost in my lunch bag), among other absentmindedness. I reached my breaking point and told myself it was time to start saying no to things until my race was over. Keep that in mind when trying to cram in cross country flights, house renovation, and Ironman training. One day at a time. Sorry I missed you in Bend! I didn’t have enough vacation to sneak away for Oiselle shenanigans and a trip to Penticton. Racing won in the end.
